Review

Since Elvis passed away in 1977, there have been very few recordings of his last year on earth (apart from bootlegs) for fans to savor and enjoy. His final studio album, Moody Blue, featured recordings from 1976, and the 1977 soundtrack to the CBS TV special, Elvis in Concert, just whetted the appetites of fans all over the world searching for Elvis in the prime of his (so-called) decline. The 23 tracks here are all previously unreleased live recordings from his 1977 Spring tours, just months before his death. Those who think that Elvis didn't have it in him at the end should spend some time listening to Spring Tours '77, which includes some rare and sometimes exciting Elvis performances. Okay, so he sleepwalks through "Heartbreak Hotel" and some other early gems, but he'd been sleepwalking through them since his 1968 comeback! There are some older tracks that he has fun with that are certainly worth hearing, including "Trying to Get to You," "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "Polk Salad Annie," to name a few. His voice was not as strong as it used to be (most noticeably on "Bridge Over Troubled Water"), but his heart and soul remained dedicated to performing. Some of the rambling between the songs is questionable (what frame of mind was he in?), but that just adds to the charm of this release. For an Elvis fan, it's great to hear officially released stereo soundboard recordings from this era, but, better yet, it proves that Elvis was not washed up near the end of his life as so many have suggested.
